Add Humor to It!
Using Humor to Enhance Your Brand — A Brief Explanation
Before you think that humor may not be right for your business, let me clarify the difference between comedy and humor. First, understand that comedy and humor are tools, highly effective ones, that get your message across.
Comedy is what stand-up comics do. It’s what sitcoms do. I know a few things about this because I did stand-up and I also wrote and produced sitcoms. Comedy, my definition, goes for The Big Laugh, the “hard’ joke, one after the other. It’s generally sharply sarcastic and at someone’s expense. , possibly even the person telling the joke.
But like any misused tool, comedy can work against you. Super Bowl ads have had that issue over the years. The result can often be that the audience remembers the funny joke, not your product or service. Super Bowl ads have had this problem for years.the very funny joke, but converts no one to buy because no one remembers what was being sold. Not a good strategy when you’re shelling out over $5.5 million just for 30 seconds of air time. And that doesn’t include the millions it costs to actually make the ad.
Humor, which I now specialize in,
and which I recommend you use, is, to me, “comedy lite.” It’s the soft joke, the “comedy lite” joke that does not overshadow your brand. It enhances it. Supports it. It’s the clever, witty, off-handed, occasionally silly comment that makes a point without hitting you over the head with it; the humor that makes you nod, smile and potentially even reach as high up the Guffaw Chart as a chuckle! Granted, it’s hardly a chart topper. But then again, you’re not selling jokes. You’re selling whatever it is your selling.
Humor’s lightness is engaging. It makes your brand likable and memorable. If you want to use comedy, you can build up to that by starting with humor and bringing your audience along with you, in essence, “training” them for what’s to come, Get it?
