Your Marketing is the Face of Your Business.
Put a Smile on That Face.
Add Humor to It!
5 out of 4 Billionaires Say They Suck at Math
Okay, I made that up. Look…we’re more likely to buy from someone we have a good connection with, someone we like rather than someone we wouldn’t trust to fix our brakes/to be our food taster/if they gave us a free apple. Using humor is a great way start that connection is with humor. I’m not saying you have to do a stand-up act or answer your phone after inhaling helium. This is not about making you or your business funny. It’s about getting you noticed, engaging with people and having you stand out from the competition.
Humor can do that.
If you’re marketing your product or service using the same methods and channels that all your competitors use, how will you stand out enough so that people will find you? What are you offering that’s going to make people want to choose you over everybody else and their uncle?
For example, would you rather read a website that grabs your attention immediately with a clever headline that makes you smile and is smart, informative, and fun to read, or one that’s informative, sterile, and sleep-inducing?
I could go on and on–and I do when I speak in public–but listen, people want to be entertained. They’re stressed, depressed, working for the weekend, looking for something different than the same old same old.
You’ve got to be different, stand out from the crowd, give your prospective client/customer a good reason to like you. If you add humor to your message and make reading it, listening to it, watching it fun, then you can grab your slice of the pie whether in a website, video, blog, direct mail piece or in any other kind of marketing you do, then you will engage your customer and have the edge over your competition.
Liking you is the first step to trusting you.
There’s no doubt that humor can get people in a good enough mood to buy something. But is it a good fit for your business? You’re serious about what you do. As you should be. You’ve invested a lot of time and money into it. And besides, what’s so funny about your business?
Not a whole heck of a lot. Which is exactly the point. Your brand is King and we all know what happens when you displease the King. So we’re diligent about keeping the spotlight on your brand and not on the humor. Humor enhances your brand, gives it life, makes it all interesting, engaging and fun without denigrating what you do.
See, the wonderful thing about humor is it’s a tool. It grabs attention. It engages people unlike anything else. And when done right, the way our years of experience have taught us, it doesn’t detract from, make fun of or overshadow your brand. Instead, it enhances it and helps makes it stronger!
In fact, humor:
- makes your business different because it stands out from your competition
- breaks down the wall between you and your customers and makes them feel good
- helps build trust and relationships
- demonstrates that you’re a human being and not a sterile, personality-challenged conglomerate
- makes you memorable
- shows that while you take your business seriously, you’re not afraid to have some fun
And, honestly, couldn’t we all use more fun in our lives?
We don’t expect humor to spawn a generation of chuckling, back-slapping funeral directors. Nor do we want them. But it could very well be the missing link to getting your brand noticed and furthering your business’ success.
